We believe that every dyslexic/dyspraxic adult should have the opportunity to:

  • Develop an understanding of their personal profile of strengths and difficulties
  • Be introduced to techniques and strategies that will help them build on their strengths and overcome their difficulties
  • Develop the confidence to achieve their full potential

Dyslexia and Dyspraxia in Adults

Dyslexia and dyspraxia are complex - it is highly unlikely that any two adults will have exactly the same profile. Dyslexic/dyspraxic adults frequently have surprising strengths and difficulties.

There are many definitions of dyslexia. Dyslexia causes problems with reading, writing and spelling. It can also affect short-term memory, concentration, organisation, time management and sequencing.

A definition of dyspraxia can be found on Dyspraxia Foundation's website. Dyspraxia typically causes problems with processing what you read, handwriting, organisation of ideas, personal organisation and time management. There will be a childhood history of motor coordination and motor skill difficulties.

Dyslexic/dyspraxic difficulties in adults can result in stress and low self-esteem.

Dyslexic/dyspraxic adults often have strengths in areas such as creative arts & design, problem solving, thinking holistically and working with people in the caring professions. They are typically very focused, determined and hard working.

Dyslexic/dyspraxic adults may not succeed because they don’t understand their own way of thinking and so become frustrated by difficulties with seemingly simple tasks.

If you think you might be dyslexic try the screening available at https://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/common/ckeditor/filemanager/userfiles/Adult-Checklist.pdf If you score more than 45 you should consider having an assessment.

A detailed assessment by a psychologist or a trained specialist teacher is needed to identify a dyslexic/dyspraxic profile.
